Who can register for the DSH examination?

External (non-enrolled students of Fulda University of Applied Sciences) and internal (enrolled students of Fulda University of Applied Sciences) persons can register for the DSH exams / DSH exam-trainings.

The condition for participation is proof of German language skills at level B2.

How does the registration work?

Registration for the DSH application takes place via an online form. We will activate this form on the previously announced date in the course of the morning. Unfortunately, we cannot give an exact time. The online form must be filled out completely by the applicant and the language certificate (at least level B2) must be uploaded in the corresponding field.

For the time being, this registration is an application and does not yet secure a place at the DSH exam. The applications will be reviewed within 6 weeks after the registration closes. Within this time, applicants will receive written feedback (acceptance or rejection) on their DSH application by mail or e-mail.

External applicants can only apply via the online form on the respective date. Internal students of Fulda University of Applied Sciences can apply at any time by e-mail at sophia.schaefer@sk.hs-fulda.de.

When is the application deadline for the DSH?

There is no exact application deadline for the DSH examination. Approximately 250 people are admitted to each exam and when this number is reached, the application form is taken off the homepage and all other external applicants receive a rejection. The internal applicants (registered students of Fulda University of Applied Sciences) can still register until a few days before the exam.

How much does DSH participation cost?

The participation fee is currently 150,- € for external participants. This fee must be paid until the named date in the approval letter. Oherwise you cannot take part.

A reduced fee of 80,- € is charged for participants of the DSH intensive courses, as well as for students of the University of Applied Sciences Fulda (upon presentation of the certificate of enrolment).

Questions and answers about the DSH

What is the DSH?

DSH means "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang" (German Language Test for University Entrance).

Applicants who have not completed their school-leaving certificate (higher education entrance qualification) in Germany must prove that they are linguistically competent to take up the subject. Proof is provided by passing the DSH. The structure and content of the examination are described in the Special Examination Regulations of the DSH Examination Regulations.

What parts does the exam consist of?

There is a written exam (3 1/2 hours) and, 3-4 weeks later, an oral exam (20 minutes).

The written DSH consists of 4 parts. For each part there is an individual result (200 or 100 points).

1st part: Listening comprehension (200 p.)
2nd part: Text production (200 p.)
3rd part: Reading comprehension (200 p.)
3rd part: Scientific language structures (100 p.)

Examination example here

Only candidates who have passed the written part with a total of 57% can take the oral DSH.
Each candidate is given 10 minutes to prepare. Then they have to give a short talk on a prepared topic and engage in a dialogue with the examiners.

How can you prepare for the DSH?

  • DSH intensive course for participants at level B2

The DSH intensive course (22 hours per week) is suitable for participants with knowledge at level B2. Level B2 must therefore be proven. The course comprises approx. 300 teaching hours. Registration is accepted at the office of the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences. You can find more information on the page "German as a Foreign Language" under DSH Intensive Course.

The exam training course lasts 13 days. It serves to train for the exam situation. We usually offer the DSH exam training before the DSH dates in March and September. In the DSH exam training, the exam sections are presented and simulated. The course is for participants who have already attended courses at level C1 and who would like to get to know the structure and requirements of the exam. You can find more information on the DSH exam trainingpage.

  • DSH intensive training (new!) for participants with a lot of energy and very good previous knowledge

As a new form of preparation, we offer the two-day DSH Intensive Training. In 20 teaching units, the participants work on all 4 parts of the exam and, while correcting together, learn about the criteria according to which the solutions are evaluated. Two rewarding but also exhausting days await the participants. You can find more information on the DSH exam training page.

Who has to take the DSH?

If you would like to study in a German-language degree programme at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, you must prove that you know enough German to cope with your studies. However, you do not necessarily have to take the DSH.

Here is a list of possible proofs:

  • DSH-2
  • Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF), TDN 4 in all sections
  • German part of the assessment test at preparatory courses (Studienkollegs)
  • German Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs - Level II (DSD II)
  • Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung of the Goethe-Institut (ZOP)
  • Small or Large German Language Diploma
  • (University degree in German Studies can be recognised. However, the possibility of recognition will be examined by the International Office on a case-by-case basis)

If you would like to study in a non-German-language degree programme or only want to complete a temporary partial degree programme at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, you do not need the DSH or any of the other certificates.

What do DSH-1, DSH-2 and DSH-3 mean?

The result of a passed DSH can be DSH-1, DSH-2 or DSH-3. This depends on the overall written and oral result:

  • DSH-1 = at least 57% in both parts
  • DSH-2 = at least 67% in both parts
  • DSH-3 = at least 82% in both parts

So if, for example, you achieved 60% in the written examination and 80% in the oral examination, you will receive the result DSH-1, because the written examination was below the level of DSH-2!

What result do I need for matriculation?

To enrol in a German-language degree programme at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, you normally need DSH-2. In individual cases, please enquire at the International Office or see the descriptions of the degree programmes at Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
