One of the methods is trial and error. But in a system with hundreds of inputs and outputs (IOs), this is probably not the most efficient way of working. With the newly developed peripheral test benches, it is a nice didactic task to work with a different method... chasing Murphy systematically.
Systematic means that the operation should at least be organized hirachically, with all the debugging functions that modern automation systems can offer. This seems trivial and redundant? Laboratory work proves the opposite and the necessity.
