MediaLab

Building 46, 3rd floor

The MediaLab of the Department of Computer Science was set up to enable students to carry out experiments in the field of visual representation or human-computer interaction or to research innovations in these areas with the help of modern tools.

The MediaLab is divided into the units MediaLab UsabilityLab, MediaLab Studio, MediaLab Sandbox and MediaLab Pool. Their premises can be used depending on the situation.

Room 46 (E) - 333

The UsabilityLab is operated in cooperation with the Competence Centre for Human-Computer Interaction(KMCI).

The UsabilityLab is a modern, spacious and flexible usability/UX laboratory for teaching and research, which is also open to questions from industrial practice. User-centred observation studies can be carried out there for a wide range of scenarios: From traditional desktop workstations and mobile devices to interactive installations such as gesture interactions in front of projection screens or smart home scenarios. It can also be used for studies in the fields of consumer research and customer behaviour or social interaction.

Comprehensive software for qualitative and quantitative analyses is used for the evaluations. To support data collection, the laboratory is equipped with high-quality recording technology for synchronous recording of various data streams. For example, audio and video can be recorded using high-resolution, remote-controlled cameras. This is supplemented by the use of professional eye tracking solutions (eye tracking and analysis).
The experiments can be observed live in a separate observation room via a large one-way mirror or transmitted via the cameras to other rooms of the media lab, e.g. to the connected media pool with its 20 workstations, and analysed there.

Rooms 46 (E) - 335, 336, 337, 338

Television studio

The television studio is divided into a control room and a recording area. The technology used enables the production of video content at a professional level.

Photo studio

The photo studio is spacious and, with its professional lighting system and wide-ranging, variable background area, enables high-quality studio and trick shots.

Sound studio

Voice recordings can be produced in the sound studio for commentary and backing videos. The voiceover booth and control room are adjacent to each other, but acoustically decoupled.
