Title of PhD project: "Indigenous Peoples (Politics), Everyday State and Development Experiences in Tripura, North-East India."
This study explores subaltern conceptions and experiences of the modern state in their everyday lives in everyday practice. Subalterns, here referring to communities of indigenous populations who were previously said to live a subsistence/isolated life within a non-state territory, now experience the state in multiple forms in their everyday lives. With modern state formation, they now find themselves either resisting the state, keeping the state out, or negotiating the concept of state for their own benefit and survival. The focus of this study is to understand their diverse experiences and negotiations in everyday practices in relation to the modern state in postcolonial India using Tripura, Northeast India as an example.
