Interculturality

Title of the doctoral project: "The consequences of modernity from an intercultural everyday perspective. An empirical study on the perception and actions of international students in the German social system".

Globalisation has also forced the international mobility of people in the field of higher education and promoted processes of internationalisation in highly developed states such as Germany. Thus, there is a growing number of international students who study in Germany and are confronted with various intercultural challenges there. In the new society, they have to follow unfamiliar paths, have to deal, for example, with rules, regulations and procedures in the administration of social infrastructure systems that are "normal" for locals as everyday routine features of modern society. British sociologist Anthony Giddens describes the character of regulations as "disembedding mechanisms", indicating that anonymity and the minimisation of direct communication are defining features of the structuring of modern societies. If communication is the key to overcoming intercultural challenges, the question arises how international students as newcomers can become familiar with the myriad of regulations.

The aim of my research is to understand the process of becoming familiar with these regulations and how to deal with them in everyday life. My research method comes from the field of ethnography. The data will be based on interviews with international students, critical events and other documentary evidence, as well as an autoethnographic approach. Based on this ethnographically collected data, the aim of my analysis is to find out in which ways and with which strategies international students approach and approach these intercultural adaptation processes.
