Title of the PhD project: "Social relevance and responsibility as principles of a new knowledge production. On the translation of a new relationship between science and society into the higher education system".

The doctoral thesis attempts to analyse two central (semantic and structural) processes of change within the science system and the university - on the one hand, the science policy programmes to promote reflexive knowledge production (Mode 2, 3rd mission of the universities), and on the other hand, the organisational reforms of the university in the sense of New Public Management - from the perspective of a theory of social translation and to put them into relation to each other. Case studies will be used to reconstruct how these new science policy demands for stronger application and social relevance of knowledge are translated and internally processed, both in the university as an organisation and in selected scientific disciplines.

In addition to the question of how new science policy programmes and external demands on science influence the self-understandings and self-descriptions of science and individual disciplines, the project also aims to work out the (contrary or supportive) relationship between the current organisational concepts of the university (institutional structures) and the new demands on knowledge production (cognitive or epistemological structures).

Procedure and milestones:
In order to open up the thematic field, a basic understanding of the relationship between science and its social environment should first be reconstructed by means of a system- and culture-theoretical description (milestone 1). This should provide fundamental insights into the possibilities and limits of a change in the higher education system. Subsequently, a concept for operationalising translation relations between science and its social environment will be developed based on Renn's (2006) theory of social translation (milestone 2).

Building on this, three case studies will be carried out by means of guided interviews and document analysis, each of which will analyse how these demands on knowledge production are dealt with at different levels of a higher education institution (level of disciplines, level of faculty, level of the university as a whole) and relate them to each other (milestone 3).
