Title of the doctoral project:

"Fostering Migrant Woman Entrepreneurship: An Empirical Study of Entrepreneurial Support Programmes in Germany."

The existing literature demonstrates that there is an inequitable distribution of entrepreneurship among men and women with a migrant background in Germany. Despite the existence of measures and start-up programmes designed to foster entrepreneurship, including among migrant women, there remains a discrepancy in the prevalence of entrepreneurial activity. The support measures can be seen as important instruments, but it was found that these measures were not adequately prepared to address certain challenges faced by migrant women. A review of the current literature reveals a lack of research on entrepreneurship support programmes that focus on the target group of migrant women in Germany. The objective of this study is to analyse the measures and programmes designed to promote entrepreneurship or self-employment, which are also intended for female business founders with a migrant background. The programmes in question are operated by a multitude of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and associations. In addition, the experiences of successful participants are examined. It is imperative to investigate the role of the programme and the experiences of female founders (e.g. self-employed, full- and part-time entrepreneurs, freelancers) from diverse backgrounds in order to develop effective measures and facilitate the successful establishment of migrant women in the Germany in the near future.

The research project is initiated with a comprehensive examination of the existing literature on the start-up programme and its target group, particularly focusing on the experiences of migrant women entrepreneurs. Subsequently, the empirical research is divided into three phases. The initial phase of the research entails a comprehensive examination of pertinent programmes and initiatives at the national and state levels. This includes an assessment of non-governmental organisations, local authorities, and international organisations in Germany that are (also) dedicated to fostering the entrepreneurial endeavours of migrant women. As part of the survey analysis, an evaluation of the programmes offered is designed and carried out with regard to the target group, content, modules and training courses, and so forth. Subsequently, categories are created for the interviews, which are employed in the second phase to select appropriate programmes for the qualitative interview. In the final phase, a quantitative survey is conducted with the successful participants of the start-up programme in order to gain insight into and explore their experience of starting a business with the help of the programme. The findings of the three empirical studies (mixed method) are presented in a series of conclusions, which offer recommendations for practice. These recommendations are designed to improve the existing framework for the promotion and retention of migrant women in the labour market by analysing the factors that contribute to the success of the measures / business start-up programmes in Germany.
