European integration

Title of the PhD project: "Transnational Migration of Highly Qualified People to and from Italy. The Mediterranean "Brains" on the Move: Dealing with "Brain Drain" or "Global Brain Chain"?"

Highly skilled migration has recently become one of the biggest issues in Europe, mainly due to demographic change and skills shortages within member states' labour markets. While migration trends used to be from developing to developed countries, these schemes are no longer necessarily valid today. Recent studies and statistics show that Italy is going through two processes: On the one hand, many young and highly qualified Italians migrate to other European countries, on the other hand, many young professionals live and work in Italy, many of whom come from other Mediterranean countries.

This dissertation aims to contribute to a qualitative understanding of the causes, meanings and effects of high-skilled mobility to and from Italy. It aims to explore the complex circumstances of transnational movements of young professionals in Europe - a) the inter-European movements of highly-skilled Albanians to Italy and b) the inter-EU mobility of highly-skilled Italians to Germany - but more importantly their impact on life courses, career trajectories and future mobility prospects.
