Title of the PhD project: "Securitisation of Migration: Explaining the Social Impact".

The project will examine the EURODAC system as a feature of migration security with reference to recent migration flows towards Europe. With the basic function of storing biometric information of asylum seekers and illegal migrants, the EURODAC system determines which country is responsible for processing an asylum seeker's application, thus preventing 'asylum shopping' within the EU.

Existing knowledge on securitisation is largely based on positive and negative aspects of the state and technological architecture within regional migration management. However, this project goes beyond the mere consideration of the political dimension and analyses the 'social' dimension that could explain the actual dynamics in the field.

It emphasises the importance of analysing EURODAC as an instrument of security from the migrants' perspective in order to discover its impact on migrants. Therefore, it focuses on the importance of the 'social' dimension in the form of the interaction between human (migrants, asylum seekers) and non-human (technology, database, registration) stakeholders in terms of the actor-network approach.

The project applies interpretivist epistemology to explore the "socially constructed threat" created by human interactions. With the aim of discovering interpretations and meanings vis-à-vis EURODAC, the researcher will try to determine "the meaning of a phenomenon" through the qualitative data from the interviews.
