Interculturality

Title of the PhD project: "Practices of Understanding in Globalised Work Contexts".

Complexity, virtuality and the interweaving of different linguistic, cultural and professional backgrounds are the main characteristics of the modern globalised workplace. In order to enable and secure cooperation and understanding under these conditions, new procedures, formats and routines are needed. These are the focus of the research project under the generic term of communicative practices and are to be elicited on the basis of authentic conversation recordings in the corporate context and examined in terms of their function and effect. The methodological approach is based on ethnographic conversation analysis and the interdisciplinary field of intercultural communication. Culture and interculturality are to be inductively elaborated as dynamic, interactionally created contextual factors.

Procedure and milestones:
The research is based on natural conversation data: linguistic interactions such as meetings, video calls or informal conversations at the workplace are recorded and examined for the production of understanding. The focus is on routinised strategies of communication, which can be prospective, comprehension-assuring or retrospective strategies.

Data collection is the next milestone and should be completed by spring 2021. This will be followed by data analysis, linking to theory and possibly a second round of data collection. The written elaboration will start with the first results.
