Title of the doctoral project
"Glocal spaces: Everyday negotiations of cultural identity in marginalised neighbourhoods."
Marginalised neighbourhoods are not only socially discriminated against, but usually also very heterogeneous social spaces. They are the places where the migration-related diversity of our society is most strongly concentrated (global spaces in the local area). This
This also manages to create tensions, because despite frequent contact between diverse cultural worlds of experience, marginalising appointments are currently on the rise. In addition to the challenges of social space exclusion and economic scarcity, cultural identity in urban neighbourhoods is negotiated in everyday life rather than in abstract theoretical debates.
These negotiation processes on questions of diversity, belonging and integration in marginalised neighbourhoods are examined in the doctoral project.
From the theoretical perspective of Anglophone cultural studies and with the concept of superdiversity as well as by means of qualitative participatory research, social space structures are examined as empirical frames of reference. Compared to previous university studies, the aim of the project is less an analysis of public discourses and opinions and more a lifeworld-oriented consideration of how neighbourhood residents experience migration-related diversity in the local context and develop and (re)negotiate their thought patterns.
