Interculturality

Title of the PhD project: "Forms of non-understanding in intercultural communication. A study using the example of child welfare risk assessment with families from Vietnam".

The PhD project examines forms of "non-understanding" and non-knowledge of child protection professionals in child welfare risk assessments with families from Vietnam from a cultural reflexive perspective.

The theoretical framework is based primarily on Westerkamp's theoretical approach to describing and analysing non-understanding, Nazarkiewicz's three culture-reflexive meta-concepts, and Wehling's theoretical concept for describing non-knowledge.

The data have been collected in narrative interviews and, for in-depth analysis, in group discussions, which are analysed with procedures of the hermeneutic sociology of knowledge (HWS) as well as the reflexive grounded theory methodology (RGTM).

Procedure and milestones:

  1. Thorough planning and design phase
  2. Explorative survey (narrative interviews (following Rosenthal) and, for in-depth study, group discussion also with group narratives)
  3. Explorative and hermeneutic evaluation (link between sequence analysis from the hermeneutic sociology of knowledge and the explorative evaluation approach from the reflexive grounded theory methodology)
  4. Development of adequate evaluation methods for the new research object "intercultural non-understanding" with its amorphous characteristics
