The fifth semester of the Social Law degree programme takes place in practice. The degree programme has a large number of cooperation partners. The cooperation extends to the provision of internships for the practical semester (BPS), jobs after graduation, the organisation of courses, excursions and discussion events.
Practice reference
The Praxisreferat is responsible for:
- Supervising students during the practical semester (BPS)
- Supervision and negotiation of content requirements with cooperation partners
- Acquiring internships and positions on the job market
- Support for students in the transition from study to work
- Advising students on the transition from Bachelor's to Master's programmes
Contact for:
- Students around the work placement semester
- people from the practical world who are looking for young talent for their company
- mediation between students and external positions
The practical semester serves to get to know the respective institution and the special tasks that graduates of the degree programme will face in their future professional activities.
The qualification goals of the BPS are:
- Obtaining an insight into the legal and organisational contexts of the practical placement.
- Increasingly independent application and deepening of the theoretical-methodical skills already acquired in the degree programme
- Support in finding perspectives for further studies or career paths through discussions with the responsible practical supervisors.
The university endeavours to provide the required number of practical placements with suitable institutions and companies in good time. The social law blog also provides a detailed insight into the areas in which practical experience can be gained. Taking into account the requirements for the practical semester, students should also propose their own practical placements, which will be checked for suitability by the practical department.
In accordance with the examination regulations for the Bachelor's degree programme in Social Law, the BPS is to be completed at institutions and companies in Germany and abroad, in particular in the areas of:
- Political institutions and bodies
- Local authorities
- Business
- Labour and trade unions
- Accident insurance
- Health
- Pension insurance
- Youth, Family and Social Affairs
- Migration
- Social justice
The list is not exhaustive, so that in principle institutions not mentioned may also be permissible as internship places. When selecting a placement, it must be ensured that the tasks and objectives of the BPS, as prescribed by the examination regulations for the degree programme in Social Law, can be achieved (cf. § 2 of Annex 3 of the examination regulations 2018 for the degree programme in Social Law, LL.B.). Please be sure to contact the responsible module supervisor for the BPS regarding these questions.
The BPS is prepared, accompanied and followed up by the university. For this purpose, an accompanying seminar with 2 SWS must be completed. In this context, practical placements are also introduced that are already part of a pool of placements that the Fulda University of Applied Sciences has built up for students and is continuously expanding. The preparation includes writing applications, possible procedures and contents of job interviews, negotiating contractual conditions, behaviour at the internship site, etc. The seminar also includes a presentation of the internship site.
This depends on the employer. In principle, employees are entitled to remuneration under German labour law. Since the BPS is a compulsory internship, the employer is not obliged to pay the internship according to the Minimum Wage Act. Whether there is a wage in the BPS also depends on the negotiating skills of each individual*.
