PhD project:

Life-history influences on the self-determination of residents in inpatient long-term care

Initial supervisor
Prof. Dr Daphne Hahn
Second supervisor
Prof. Dr Susanne Kümpers

Topic / Content:

Within the framework of care for people in need of care, it is demanded that self-determination and autonomy be enabled and promoted. The terms "self-determination" and "autonomy" are not defined in more detail and it remains unclear how support is to be provided. My doctoral project addresses this research gap. The research interest lies in the biographical influences on self-determination and what effects these have on the lives of the residents in the nursing home. The aim is to gain insights into the emergence and development of the notion of self-determination and how this can be perpetuated or promoted in the context of a nursing home. Qualitative research methods are planned for the investigation, whereby different perspectives are to be recorded. The focus is on narrative-biographical interviews with nursing home residents and participant observations to record institutional practice. In addition, group interviews with staff and expert interviews with management are planned.
