Being a midwife - a profession that creates meaning
31 Mar 2025
Fulda, 28 March 2025 - With heart, knowledge, responsibility and empathy into professional life: Fulda University of Applied Sciences held a farewell ceremony for 39 graduates of the dual Bachelor's programme in Midwifery. The students, who began their midwifery studies in the winter semester 2021/2022, successfully trained for 3.5 years of intensive training and became the second cohort to graduate under the new Midwifery Act.
"Being a midwife is much more than an appointment, because it creates meaning," emphasised Johanna Neumeyer, head of the degree programme, in her graduation speech. This message was a recurring theme throughout the celebratory course, which took place in Hall 8 at Fulda University of Applied Sciences. Around 250 guests - including practice instructors from the 15 cooperation partners, the university's midwifery team, families, friends and companions - celebrated this special milestone together.
In addition to inspiring speeches, an emotional picture journey of the graduates through their university studies offered an insight into the past years: laughs, intense learning moments, challenges, but above all close friendships characterised this time.
This cohort was the second to benefit from the new skills and simulation laboratories following the move to the modern health science building 53. The training related to practice at the university and around 2,200 hours of practical experience in clinics, midwifery practices, birth centres and freelance work comprehensively prepared the graduates for their future profession. The theoretical and academic training provided by an interprofessional teaching team ensured a sound and versatile education.
After being licensed as midwives, the graduates can now work in their profession or, with the academic degree of Bachelor of Science, pursue a research career and contribute to the further development of midwifery science.
The Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the Department of Health Sciences are delighted to be able to contribute to the care of women and families with these qualified graduates and wish them all the best for their future professional and private careers.
