Experiences of discrimination amongst very elderly women. Discrimination, social participation and health amongst very elderly women: an East-West comparison
Topic/Content
Despite their higher average life expectancy, older women often experience old age characterised by poverty in old age and poor health due to social discrimination and disadvantage throughout their lives. Despite this persistent gender inequality, the realities of life for older women and the impact on their health have not yet been investigated with sufficient detail. The aim of this dissertation is to reconstruct the experiences of discrimination faced by socially disadvantaged very elderly women (aged 80+) in East and West Germany from a biographical perspective and to analyse the effects on their health and social participation. Furthermore, processes of inequality throughout the women’s lifecourses will be examined, and, building on this, the extent to which these affect the lives of women in old age will be explored.
