doctoral project
Doing more than just something good! Professional-professional orientation of prospective nursing and health professionals in the transition to community welfare-orientated university studies.
Topic/content
The current process of academisation of the nursing, therapy and health sciences professions focuses on professionalisation in the academicised health professions and health-related study programmes, the competences to be acquired by students and the employment opportunities of graduates in the health system, but not on the students' orientations towards a profession or professionalism in the 'field of health', their professional-professional orientations. These orientations of university studies and prospective students have so far been little addressed for public welfare-oriented studies and empirical knowledge for the positioning of prospective nursing and health experts on the labour market is urgently needed. The academic training of prospective nursing and health professionals must be understood as a central public health task, for which a fundamental desideratum can be stated in the research of the social process of their prospective orientation formation with a view to a successful career path. With my central research question: "With which individual and collective professional-professional orientations do prospective nursing and health sciences experts take up public welfare-oriented university studies and how do they hold on to them?" I would like to fundamentally explore their professional-professional orientations for the first time and focus on their processes of orientation formation during the transition to public welfare-oriented university studies. To this end, I will conduct an explorative case study in which ego- or autoethnographic documents of prospective nursing and health professionals form my data basis. In conducting a document analysis, I will analyse their orientations in their documents using procedures of situation analysis according to Adele Clarke as well as sequentially reconstruct them in detail and work out their thinking and action patterns as well as their search and orientation processes for university studies oriented towards the common good. The results of my analysis should not only contribute to the theoretical findings of the organisation of the professional field of health in its diversity, but also explore opportunities for changing the working conditions and professional practice of public welfare-oriented groups of actors by translating my findings.
