Between 1999 and 2013, the number of people in need of care increased from 2 to 2.6 million. 29% of them, i.e. 764,000 people, received full inpatient care in 2013. In the coming years, this number will continue to rise. At the same time, society's demands on life in old age are changing: self-determination, also in assisted living and care facilities, is becoming more and more important.
A dignified life in inpatient care for the elderly includes people being able to help shape their everyday lives. Being active and helping to shape everyday life not only improves the quality of life, it also promotes health. However, nursing home residents have so far rarely been involved in shaping the daily life of the home. Examples from the USA show, however, that their experiences and knowledge can be used and that they remain more active and are more satisfied with their lives as a result.
The project wants to investigate in a total of three nursing homes in Fulda how the participation of elderly people can be improved in everyday life at the home. To this end, the different views and experiences of home managers, caregivers, relatives and volunteers will first be gathered. At the same time, biographical interviews with residents will be conducted to find out how and where they themselves see their opportunities for participation. In group processes, the possibilities of developing and implementing changes in everyday life will be explored together with residents, staff and volunteers. At the end of the project, a handbook is produced in which other interested parties can find suggestions on how they can improve the participation of residents in their own care facilities.
In the Department of Nursing and Health at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, the topic of nursing is strongly represented in research. Participation in different areas of life has been the central content and goal of various research projects for several years. With this project, the department is contributing to the further development of the still young participatory health research in Germany, especially research with old people and people in need of care. The handbook lays a foundation for developing participatory group processes in care for the elderly. The facilities involved in the project use the results directly for the design of everyday life in the home. In addition, other facilities interested in change will also benefit from the results. This is all the easier because the manual presents and explains practical examples.
