women@event series

The frauen@event series supports female students from all departments at Fulda University of Applied Sciences in their personal and professional development. The aim is to expand personal competences and facilitate the entry into professional life. Every semester, various free of charge, extra-curricular courses such as workshops and (subject) presentations are organised on changing topics.

Information about past courses can be found here.

Topic in summer semester 2025: civil courage

Do you sometimes feel powerless in the face of right-wing extremist or anti-feminist slogans? Are you unsure how to react to inflammatory and anti-democratic statements or how to expose disinformation in a quick-witted manner? Then you are like many others.

In the workshops in the summer semester 2025, you will learn valuable methods and strategies to actively combat right-wing extremism and anti-feminism, critically question fake news and conspiracy theories and confidently stand up for an open and tolerant society. Strengthen your resilience and your competence to intervene courageously and effectively.

Arguing against right-wing discourse patterns

Many people currently have the feeling that right-wing populist and anti-democratic voices are getting louder and louder. Whether in a discussion with colleagues or fellow students, a conversation with your uncle at a family celebration or in the changing room at the sports club - we are being left speechless. With our argumentation training courses, we want to counter this and enable people to overcome the moment of shock, take a stand and make it clear: We will no longer accept this!

In the workshop, we would like to focus in particular on the university environment and identify possible courses of action that support us in countering discriminatory slogans. To do this, we will first look at the topics of diversity and anti-discrimination in the university context and then focus on law discourse patterns, their function and strategies against them. We will then use a role play to discuss and practise strategies for action together.

Contents

  • Diversity competences
  • Anti-discrimination at the university
  • Law discourse patterns & their function
  • Strategies for action
  • Role play

Dealing with false reports and conspiracy narratives

False reports and conspiracy narratives are not a new phenomenon. However, digital media items, platforms and messengers have fundamentally changed the ways in which they are disseminated - their reach and speed. Especially in times of crisis, conspiracy narratives become entangled in parts of society and develop their potential to jeopardise democracy. Why is this the case? How do I recognise it? What can I do about it?

In this workshop, we will take a critical look at our own information procurement. We will learn to recognise and classify narratives, patterns and strategies. We will also try out counter-strategies in order to stand up together for a pluralistic society.

Contents:

  • Introduction to definitions and terms
  • Recognising disinformation and conspiracy myths and their mechanisms
  • Connections to right-wing extremism and anti-Semitism
  • Exploring everyday strategies for action

The workshop combines content-related impulses, practical practice classes as well as discussion and reflection units and alternates between plenary and small group phases.

Speaker:

Tina Leskien is a political educator, facilitator and trainer for social justice and diversity.

Sexism and Antifeminism - What is it and what can I do?

The workshop offers a space for a moderated exchange of experiences with anti-feminism and sexism in the everyday lives of students. In short inputs, you will learn more about the differences between the phenomena and the significance of antifeminism for law and anti-democratic movements. Together we will develop strategies for dealing with sexism and antifeminism. The mixture of input, exchange and interactive practice classes will enable you to leave the training stronger and with the knowledge you need to take action in your everyday life at university and beyond.

Speaker:

Juliane Lang is project manager and principal investigator in the BMBF-funded GERDEA network (Interactions between social gender relations and the contemporary extreme law. Dynamics - Effects - Ambivalences) and a trainer in political adult education.
