Admission Requirements
The admission requirements are a first degree qualifying for a profession (Bachelor’s degree, “Diplom”) in Food Technology or a related discipline with a grade of at least 2.5 and 210 ECTS credits (7-semester standard duration of studies). If applicants have any gaps in their specialist knowledge or have a Bachelor’s degree worth only 180 ECTS credits (6-semester standard duration of studies), they will be required to complete additional modules (study requirements). Applicants are also required to be employed alongside their studies for at least 19 hours per week.

What Is This Programme About?

Building on a Bachelor’s degree in Food Technology and some initial professional experience, this Master’s degree programme deepens students’ knowledge and skills in science, process engineering, food technology, and management.

The Master’s programme aims to deliver interdisciplinary, applied training to prepare graduates for challenging professional roles and responsibilities. The programme is especially intended to equip graduates to independently develop, implement and monitor concepts for complex tasks in production, research and development in the food industry and to assume management responsibilities.

The special structure of this programme makes it particularly suitable for food technologists who wish to gain more in-depth specialist knowledge of their subject without giving up or interrupting their current employment. The programme is also interesting for food technologists with professional experience who would like to gain further qualifications but have family commitments that put constraints on their time and location.

How is the programme structured?

The standard duration of studies for the part-time Master’s programme is five semesters. Students can adjust the programme according to the amount of time they have available by varying the number of modules they take each semester. The course content is divided into compulsory and compulsory elective modules. Students must complete five compulsory and seven compulsory elective modules plus the Master’s thesis. The recommendation is to earn 15 ECTS per semester (3 modules of 5 ECTS each). Instruction is provided by a combination of web-based learning and on-campus attendance (mainly Friday and Saturday), which gives students flexibility as to when and where they study. They write their Master’s thesis in the final semester.

Where does it lead?

Graduates of the part-time Master’s programme in Food Processing are ideally prepared to assume positions of responsibility in management in interesting and diverse fields within the food industry, but also in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry and the chemical and environmental engineering industry. Possible fields include planning, control and monitoring of complex technological processes, development, implementation and optimisation of new product concepts, and process optimisation according to economic, product-specific and energy-related criteria. Career opportunities also exist in consulting, at higher grades of the public service, and in science and academia for graduates who choose to take a doctoral degree.
