Enrolment

Welcome to Germany, welcome to Fulda!

We are pleased that you decided to study at Hochschule Fulda and that you were accepted for admission. You now need to enrol in order to become a student at Hochschule Fulda. The following paragraphs provide the most important information about this process.

You will arrive in Fulda only a few days before the first lectures start and you feel uncertain about the administrative steps to take? No need to worry: Every semester the International Office organizes a special orientation week for new international students at Hochschule Fulda. Our student mentors will support you in all necessary steps until enrolment. You will also have the opportunity to ask about classes, get to know our campus, make friends, and many other topics. For further information, please see here

We recommend paying in the semester fee by debit or credit card (Maestro, MasterCard, VISA, V Pay, VISA electron) directly in our office. The advantage is that you will receive your student ID-card and your semester ticket (1) on the same day.

If you wish to transfer the semester fee, we would advise you to transfer the fee in good time. The semester ticket will only be handed over to you if the semester fee has been received by the Hochschule before the enrolment. Please bear in mind that a bank transfer might take one week (7 days).

Enrolment for all international students from outside Germany

Students coming to Germany for the first time need to take several very important administrative steps in order to enrol.

If you are a Master’s student, an exchange student, or a scholarship holder, you have probably rented out a room through the International Office. If so, please follow all steps mentioned below.

In case you found accommodation on the private market, your enrolment process starts with step 3.

Step 1: Move into your room

  • You will receive your room key and rental agreement upon arrival (please sign)
  • In the residence halls “Wiesenmühlenstraße” and “Heinrich-von-Bibra-Platz” no WiFi is available. Upon payment of a €10 deposit, the International Office would be glad to provide you with an internet cable.
  • On the day of your arrival, a student mentor would be happy to show you the nearest grocery store so you can buy food or drinks if you would like.
  • Your student mentor will schedule an appointment with you in the days after you arrive. You will be able to discuss any questions you may have and he or she will guide you through the next steps.

Step 2: The day after your arrival - information from your student mentor

  • How do I air out and heat my room and how do I handle the garbage?
  • How do the electronic devices in my room work?
  • Where is the nearest grocery store?
  • Where is the nearest bus station?
  • How do I find my way around Fulda? (City plan?)
  • How do I get to the university?
  • Your student mentor will go with you through all documents you received from the landlord. Some need to be filled out, signed, and given back to the landlord.
  • Your student mentor will go with you to buy a German mobile phone card. Please consider sharing this phone number with your student mentor.

Step 3: Registration at the local citizens’ office

The first step is to register at the local citizens’ office (Bürgerbüro):

Bürgerbüro Stadt Fulda
Schlossstr. 1
36037 Fulda
Tel.: 0661-102-1111
buergerbuero@fulda.de

Please bring your rental agreement and your passport.

Step 4: Open a bank account

You can choose to open a bank account with several banks including the Deutsche Bank or the Sparkasse in Fulda.

Please bring your rental agreement, your passport, and your registration card.

Step 5: Take out health insurance

In Germany everyone must have health insurance, including students. Without health insurance you will not be allowed to enrol at the university.

  • If you are under 30, you will be required to take out a health insurance policy with a statutory health insurance scheme. Some examples are AOK, Barmer, Techniker, etc. (Student rates are approx. €80 per month)
  • If you are over 30, you will be required to take out a health insurance plan through a private company. We can recommend health insurance plans through Union/Viktoria (Rate “Optimal”). This insurance will be accepted by the local foreigners registration office (Ausländerbehörde) when applying for a visa extension.
  • The statutory health insurance company will give you a member card. You will need this for your enrolment at the university and at the local foreigners registration office.
  • Please make a copy of your temporary member card and keep this copy with you until you receive your health insurance card. While you’re waiting for your health insurance card, the temporary member card serves as proof that you are insured.

Please bring your bank account details, your passport, and your letter of acceptance.

Special note for exchange students holding a European Health Insurance Card from their home country: You do not need to take out a German health insurance. You can enrol with your foreign EHIC.
