Funding

As a recognised refugee in Germany, you can apply for BAföG grant, regardless of how long you have been in Germany.

What is BAföG?
BAföG grant is an educational grant that the German state provides to all students if they or their parents are unable to fund the costs of university studies. You receive up to 992 euros per month to cover living and study costs. After completing your university studies, you must repay half of the money you received through the BAföG grant to the state, but never more than a total of 10,000 euros.

No tuition fees
There are hardly any costs for the university studies themselves. There are generally no tuition fees at German universities, as the German state covers the costs of studying. Fulda University of Applied Sciences does not charge tuition fees. A contribution to the costs is only charged for study preparation programs, such as pre-study and German courses. Participants with a refugee background can apply for a reduction in the course fees. Please contact the coordinator.

Costs:

  1. If you enrol as a regular student, you will have to pay a semester fee of approx. 390 euros (= 6 months). In return, you will also have a Germany semester ticket, which allows you to use public transport such as buses or trains (without ICE or IC) free of charge or the cafeteria, which offers food at reduced prices for students.
  2. If you register as a non-registered student Fulda University of Applied Sciences will cover the costs for a maximum of 2 semesters.

Support

We provide refugees with advice and support - in choosing a degree programme, applying, dealing with the authorities and throughout their studies. Specifically, we offer you:

Intensive advisory services on study options and student funding
We will find the right programmes offered for you in a personal meeting. We will clarify whether you fulfil the conditions and show you ways of obtaining funding, e.g. through scholarships.

Don't be afraid of bureaucracy
Experienced students will help you to apply for all the documents you need for your stay in Germany and your university studies.

Not alone on campus
To help you quickly feel at home in Fulda and at the university, a buddy will accompany you during your first semester. He or she is a student like you and has already been studying in Fulda for a few semesters. Further information

Rooms available
German students often live in shared accommodation (WG). These are flats in which each resident has their own room - but the bathroom and kitchen are shared. Shared flats are ideal for getting to know other students and everyday life. And you will also learn German. We will be happy to help you find a room.

Speak and write German confidently
You don't speak German very well yet and are unsure how to express yourself properly? Don't worry: in the language workshop, tutors will help you with your written work. And in the Self-Study Centre you will find the right facilities for relaxed and successful learning. Further information
