Green Travel

Grant for Green Travel

As of the project year 2024, students can apply for up to 6 additional travel days that can be taken into account as additional days for the total funded duration per semester abroad or attendance of a BIP (Blended Intensive Programme) if they use "Green Travel" (sustainable travel). This applies if your travel to your study abroad destination takes longer due to the use of green transport systems like bus, train, car-pooling, bike, etc.) These additional travel days will be granted based on a Declaration of Honour that is integrated in the Mobility Online workflow.

Students with fewer opportunities receive a travel allowance for attendance at a BIP, which is based on the distance between the home university and the partner university. "Green" travel is also possible here:

Which means of transport are covered by Green Travel?

Green Travel" refers to trips where low-emission means of transport such as bus, train or carpooling are used for the majority of the journey. There is no detailed list of possible means of transport in the Erasmus+ program. For example, travelling by ship also counts as "green travel" if the location can otherwise only be reached by plane (e.g. Ireland, Iceland, etc.)

Travelling by plane does not count as a sustainable means of transport, even if CO2 emissions are offset.

Can the top-up for "Green Travel" also be paid if only one route (outward or return journey) fulfils the requirements?

As long as at least 50% of the mobility is covered by "Green Travel", the journey fulfils the criteria for the "Green Travel" grant.
