Subsidy for green travel

From the 2025 call, all Erasmus+ participants (students and university staff) are entitled to a travel allowance based on distance, regardless of the duration of their stay. The amount of the travel allowance depends on whether participants predominantly use environmentally friendly means of transport (at least 50% of the journey) or not.

Students who use an environmentally friendly means of transport to travel to and from the partner university can apply for up to 6 days of travel, which will be taken into account for the total duration of the grant. A separate requirement passes in the case of an extended arrival/departure due to the use of a low-emission means of transport. These additional travel days are granted on the basis of a statement of honour. The statement is integrated into the mobility administration process on Mobility Online. Applying for additional travel days is only possible for distances of 850 km or more, as 2 travel days are taken into account for all students without an application.

What means of transport are meant by Green Travel?

"Green Travel" refers to trips where low-emission means of transport such as bus, train or carpooling are used for the majority of the journey. There is no detailed list of possible means of transport in the Erasmus+ program. For example, travel by ship is also considered "green travel" if the location can otherwise only be reached by plane (e.g. Ireland, Iceland, etc.)

Air travel is not considered a sustainable means of transport, even if CO2 emissions are offset.

Can the top-up for "green travel" also be paid if only one route (outward or return journey) meets the requirements?

If at least 50% of the mobility is covered by "green travel", the trip fulfils the criteria for the grant for "green travel".
