Health Insurance

In Germany, all students must take out health insurance, there is no enrolment without it.
Statutory health insurance companies are e.g. AOK, TK, Barmer, DAK. But there are many more!

You cannot insure yourself in the statutory health insurance at the student rate if you:

  • are in a preparatory (German) course for university studies
  • are 30 years of age or older

In these cases, you must take out private health insurance. Information on this can be obtained from the International Office.

Your proof of health insurance must be available at the time of enrolment, otherwise you cannot be enrolled. You cannot submit this yourself, but must ask your health insurance company to send the university's study office the electronic notification (M10) that you are insured. To do this, you must first submit your admission to the subject studies to the health insurance company and, after enrolment, your certificate of study.
You can also register with the statutory health insurance from abroad via the websites of the health insurance companies, if you're not in Germany yet at enrolment.

Please note that you are subject to compulsory health insurance from the first day of enrolment or the first day of the semester (01.10. or 01.04. of the current year) and must therefore pay the contributions from this month, even if you are not yet in Germany.

If you have health insurance coverage (EHIC) in another EU country and would like to remain so, you must still ask a statutory health insurance company in Germany to send notification of your insurance coverage to the Student Affairs Office. To do this, you must present the EHIC from your home country. You can also do this online, using the contact form on the website of a statutory health insurance company. If you would like to take up paid work in Germany, e.g. a mini-job, you must take out statutory health insurance in Germany for the duration of the employment relationship.

Please also note that if your home country pays lower flat rates for medical services than Germany, you will need additional insurance, otherwise you will have to make co-payments, which can be very expensive! You can get information about this from your health insurance company in your home country.

If you have to take out private insurance, you must choose a tariff that has at least the same scope of benefits as the statutory health insurance. This is usually not the case with pure travel insurance or so-called "basic" tariffs. You cannot use them to extend your residence permit. Even as a privately insured student, you must ask a statutory health insurance company, including your admission and proof of health insurance, to send the notification (M10) to the Student Affairs Office. This can also be done online, using the contact form on the website of a statutory health insurance company.

Don't worry - we will help you get started. During the orientation week, our student tutors will be happy to accompany you through all the administrative procedures and enrolment. They know their way around and will be happy to help you!
