Admission criteria

Have you studied at university in your home country and would like to continue your studies in Germany? Or do you have a school leaving certificate that would admit you to a university in your home country and you would now like to study at a German university?

As a refugee, you can study at Fulda University

  • if you have recognised refugee status, even if your asylum procedure has not been completed or
  • if you are under a suspended deportation order.

The essential condition for university admission is a school leaving certificate that entitles you to take up further education in your home country. If other qualifications are needed, you – like other international students – can prepare for the assessment test in your chosen field of study by attending the foundation course (Studienkolleg) in Kassel.

Language skills

Most study programmes at Fulda University are conducted in German. That means that you need very good German skills in order to understand seminars or lectures in German.
Some study programmes, however, are conducted in English. For these programmes you need appropriate English skills. You do not need German skills before starting your studies.
In addition, Fulda University has bilingual study programmes which require both very good German and good English skills.

German skills for study programmes in German

  • Evidence of having passed level 2 in the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH, Test of German Language Ability for University Admission) or
  • An examination pass at level TDN 4 (4 x 4) in the “Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache” (TestDaF, Test in German as a Foreign Language)

You can take both examinations at Fulda University. Click here for more information on the DSH examination.
