5,000 euros basic scholarship for Sumy State University
16 Dec 2025
Since Palm Sunday 2025, Fulda University of Applied Sciences' partner university in north-east Ukraine has been repeatedly hit by Russian attacks - many buildings were destroyed, some severely, some completely.
University President Prof Dr Karim Khakzar has been in close exchange with those responsible on site since the first attack. "It is impressive to see the courage and perseverance with which the colleagues in Sumy continue to work and keep the academic community together despite these attacks," Khakzar states, expressing his delight at the amount of donations generated via the "Solidarity with Sumy" donation project on VR Bank Fulda's "Partner der Region" platform and through direct donations to the Friends' Association. "Given the extent of the damage, the sum seems to be just a drop in the ocean. However, we feel the great gratitude of our colleagues at Sumy State University, who also see this basic scholarship as a clear sign of friendship and solidarity," emphasised Khakzar.
The first chairman of the support association, Christoph Göbel from the ZUFALL logistics group, explained: "With our support for Sumy State University, we want to contribute to ensuring that teaching and research can continue despite the difficult situation in Ukraine. Michael Konow, Managing Director of IHK Fulda, adds: "Education is a crucial pillar for the future of a society, and especially in times of crisis, we must do everything we can to maintain it." Torsten Hopf, treasurer of the association and representative of VR Bank Fulda, also expressed his thanks: "The EUR 5,000 from our fundraising campaign will directly help Sumy State University. Any support, large or small, can make a difference, and I am proud that together as a community we are sending a signal of hope and solidarity."
Due to the dramatic situation, the Fulda University of Applied Sciences and its support association would like to appeal for further basic scholarships to be transferred to the association's account in order to ensure long-term support for the Ukrainian partner university. The intended purpose for basic scholarships remains "Help for Sumy State University / Ukraine".
