Day of honour for the Basic Law:
The Fulda University of Applied Sciences is involved

13 May 2026

Colourful program with presentations and hands-on activities from 18 May

For the first time, the Basic Law is being celebrated with a day of honour. In the two weeks surrounding 23 May, its birthday, courses will be held throughout Germany to bring people together.

The idea behind the campaign launched by Federal President Steinmeier is that democracy depends on people taking part. Enterprises, organisations and associations are called upon to facilitate encounters and create places where people can listen to each other, get to know other perspectives and grow in understanding.

Fulda University of Applied Sciences is taking part: from 18 May to 1 June, numerous courses will be held under the motto "Democracy needs commitment - every day". Interested parties from the region are also cordially invited to attend.

Kick-off event on 18 May

Vice-president Professor Dr Martina Ritter invites you to the opening event on 18 May at 2 p.m. in the University, State and Public Library (HLSB, campus location). What is the significance of the Basic Law in the context of climate change, migration and the separation of powers? Two keynote speeches will provide interesting information on this topic.

Afterwards, guests are invited to become active themselves, for example by taking part in a postcard campaign. All they have to do is write down their thoughts on the Basic Law and basic democratic concepts on a card. The postcards will be available at the HLSB campus location from 18 May to 1 June. The cards will be presented at the closing event on 1 June. Will you manage to fill an advertising pillar?

Postcard campaign based on a historical model

The campaign follows on from a campaign by Kassel lawyer and SPD politician Elisabeth Selbert. In 1948, she fought with a postcard and telegram campaign for the inclusion of equal rights for women and men in the Basic Law.

Topic towers in the HLSB

There are also many other opportunities to become active. For example, the University, State and Public Library at both locations will provide topic towers with selected books and library items for reading and borrowing - for anyone who wants to know more about the Basic Law and its history.
