Funding for Thesis on Human Right to Water
31 Mar 2026
Soheil Golchin, Iranian student in the Master’s programme Human Rights Studies at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, has been awarded a fellowship from the Water Diplomacy Center (WDC). His thesis project examines how international water law can contribute to ensuring the human right to water in the context of transboundary waters, with a particular focus on Iran’s shared water resources.
Golchin has a legal background specializing in public international law, especially the international law of the sea and international water law. He holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Law from Iran and is currently pursuing a second Master’s degree in Human Rights Studies at the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences.
Most recently, he completed a three-month internship at the Legal Office of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg. In addition, he is a Fellow of the Young Water Diplomats Programme at IHE Delft and a member of the Network for Afghan-Iranian Water Scholars (NAIWS).
In his Master’s thesis (supervised by Prof. Dr Jörn Reinhardt), he examines how the human right to water can be better protected through a new interpretation of international rules on transboundary waters. His focus is on water bodies in Iran and on how the principle of equitable and reasonable use can promote fair and sustainable access to shared water resources. In doing so, he combines international water law with human rights standards to identify practical improvements.
The scholarship from the Blue Peace Middle East Initiative (Water Diplomacy Centre) supports graduates through funding, mentoring and a network of experts. For Golchin, it represents recognition and a platform to further develop his research – with a focus on practical and policy-relevant outcomes.
