IWU 2026 offered a successful mix of academic learning, cultural impressions and personal exchange.

The degree of the 13th International Winter University (IWU) 2026 marks the end of a three-week international study programme at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences, which combined academic teaching, intercultural exchange and insights related to practice in the history, society and culture of Germany. A total of 20 students from seven countries took part in the IWU programme, including students from South Africa for the first time as part of a newly established international cooperation.

During the program, the participants dealt intensively with topics such as intercultural competence, business and German culture and society. In addition, they attended German language courses at various levels, in which they expanded their language skills and actively used them in everyday life.

A central component of IWU 2026 was the extensive field trip and supporting programme. The students visited Berlin, Würzburg and Weimar, among other places, as part of field trips lasting several days and one day. There was particular interest in exploring German history, especially the division of Germany and the GDR past. Many participants took advantage of additional optional offers such as a visit to the Stasi Museum, the Topography of Terror or the GDR Museum.

In addition to the academic and historical learning content, social and cultural exchange also played an important role. The accompanying Buddy Programme offered numerous opportunities for international students and tutorial assistants to meet each other. Joint activities ranged from games evenings and a well-attended dance course to an intercultural meeting evening in the "living room" Welcome In! in Fulda. These formats contributed significantly to supporting exchange outside of the seminar room and strengthening international networks.

Looking back, several participants emphasised the special combination of academic learning, cultural impressions and personal exchange. "I really enjoyed the whole program, the teaching, the cities we visited, the landscape, the nature - everything was really beautiful and well organised," said Viktoria Fedotova from Ukraine.

"I will always be grateful and happy that I was chosen and then came here and met these people," summarised Thabang Philasande My Life Molimi, South Africa. "I have seen what life outside my home country is actually like, which has made me want to do even more for myself, take responsibility and not be satisfied with what I have achieved in my life so far."

The International Winter University 2026 was organised by the International Office of Fulda University of Applied Sciences. The IWU not only offers international students a sound insight into academic work in Germany, but also creates sustainable spaces for intercultural learning, personal development and long-term international cooperation.
