Just Transition and Re-Existence

Latin American Perspectives on Future Making and Knowledge Production in the Socio-Ecological Crisis

January 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM in room 22.301

We are delighted to invite you to a panel discussion titled “Just Transition and Re-Existence: Latin American Perspectives on Future Making and Knowledge Production in the Socio-Ecological Crisis” with Johanna Leinius and Marco Antonio Teixeira as part of the lectures series 2025-2026 of the Research Impulse „Shaping Future Societies“. This event will take place on January 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM in room 22.301.

Join us as we explore how social movements and communities in Latin America are addressing the ecological crisis and challenging the unsustainable expansion of extractivist territories. This discussion will delve into the imagination and implementation of post-extractive futures and just transitions by looking at concrete struggles and new forms of knowledge production

Johanna Leinius will argue that concepts such as ‘re-existence‘ and ’body-territory‘, developed in these struggles, articulate the situated and corporeal knowledges of the places where life is reproduced. She connects these concepts to German debates on social reproduction and prefiguration in the contexts of movements, reflecting on the politics of translation across the colonial divide.

Marco Antonio Teixeira will present an input from his research on just transition during the People’s Summit, a parallel event to the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30) in Belém/Brazil. Focusing on how social movements have constructed convergences around the concept of just transition, he will discuss the controversies that emerged in this process. Furthermoe, his presentation aims to reflect on what these insights reveal about the politics of just transitions as articulated by social movements.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Sebastian Garbe and Tanja Scheiterbauer (both Fulda University).

Dr. Johanna Leinius is a social scientist and scientific manager of the Cornelia Goethe Center for Gender Studies at Goethe University Frankurt. Dr. Marco Antonio Teixeira will be a Fellow at the DFG Research Cluster Shaping Future Societies (SaFe) at Fulda University of Applied Sciences between January and March 2026.

We hope you will join us for this event. For any inquiries, please contact the scientific coordinator of SaFe, Il-Tschung Lim (il-tschung.lim(at)sk.hs-fulda.de).

We look forward to this exchange of ideas and insights.
