The Fulda University of Applied Sciences team at the German University Championship (DHM) Ultimate Frisbee 2025
The German University Championship (DHM) in Ultimate Frisbee 2025 was organised by Fulda University of Applied Sciences' University Sports department. Twenty teams with more than 300 players had registered.
As a team sport, Ultimate Frisbee is played 5 against 5 (indoor) and 7 against 7 (outdoor). To score a point, the disc must be caught within the opponent's end zone. Players need to be fit, strong sprinters, throwing technique and tactical thinking. However, team spirit, sportsmanship and fair play take centre stage. Unlike many other team sports, Ultimate Frisbee takes place without physical contact or referees and is suitable for all ages and abilities.
"The grounds at Sportpark Johannisau left nothing to be desired for the players," reports Samuel Rill, coordinator of University Sports. From Saturday morning until the afternoon, the group matches were played in four "pools" on two grass pitches and in the stadium itself. The teams played for a good starting position for the knockout phase. The round of 16 was then played in the early evening.
"As expected, the matches became increasingly close during the knockout matches on Sunday. The matches for places 5, 7 and 9 were all decided in the so-called 'Universe' - this means that the score is tied at the expire of the time and the next point decides between victory and defeat. It doesn't get more exciting than that," says Samuel Rill.
The University of Tübingen and the WG Munich fought their way to the final in high-class Ultimate games. In the end, WG (Wettkampfgemeinschaft) München prevailed 10:7 against the defending champions from the University of Tübingen.
The team from Fulda University of Applied Sciences secured 13th place in the tournament with two victories in the deciding games - a remarkable success for a comparatively small university.
At the award ceremony, each team was honoured with a certificate and a team photo as a souvenir. The top three teams were awarded additional trophies from the German University Sports Federation (adh) as well as gold, silver and bronze Frisbees.
It is a tradition in Ultimate Frisbee that a prize for fair play and team spirit (the so-called "spirit") is also awarded - because this team spirit forms the foundation of the entire game of Ultimate. This year, for a change, there was a shared Spirit victory, namely the WG Freiburg together with the WG Erlangen-Nuremberg.
The University Sports Programme of Fulda University of Applied Sciences together with the German University Sports Federation (adh) and the Frisbee division of DAFKS KONTAKT ("Fuldimates") were responsible for the successful organisation.
"The weekend was a complete success and a celebration for all fans of Ultimate Frisbee," summarises Samuel Rill. "It was also by far the biggest frisbee event that Fulda has ever seen."
