CHANCE - Community Health Management to Enhance Behaviour
What influence does the district have on the health and personal well-being of its residents - and vice versa? Are there cultural differences?
CHANCE wanted to find out how people living in different European cities perceive information on health and how they deal with it.
The residents of the city districts were motivated to actively participate in improving the health consumer education offers in their neighbourhoods.
The project particularly wanted to reach socially, culturally or economically disadvantaged groups, such as older single people, migrants and families.
- Comparison of different health information systems of the participating European countries
- Analysis of district structures
- Analysis of health knowledge and perception of health messages, resources and barriers of households, especially of older people, migrants and families with children.
- Initiation of local networks
- Introduction of district-based services
In selected neighbourhoods of the project cities from six European countries, the health situation of the inhabitants and life in the neighbourhood were analysed:
- Fulda, Germany - Südend and Kohlhaus
- Jelgava, Latvia - RAF district
- Liverpool, Great Britain - Liverpool South Central
- Timisoara, Romania - Dumbravita
- Uppsala, Sweden - Eriksberg
- Vienna, Austria - Schneiderviertel, 11th district
In each case, local networks were established and services created to improve the health conditions in the neighbourhood and to develop a personal healthy lifestyle.
Results
A guide for district-based health management for behaviour change was jointly developed. It is available in German, English, Latvian, Romanian and Swedish to organisations and institutions throughout Europe that want to set up health management adapted to the respective local socio-spatial structure. After an introduction to the topic, 13 basic guidelines are explained and illustrated with practical examples from the individual countries.
