Lithium content of food from the Fulda region

Lithium is a trace element whose exact biochemical and nutritional function has not been sufficiently clarified.

Based on the results of the analyses, statements can be made in the future about the extent to which drinking water and beer contribute to the supply of lithium in the diet of humans, especially men. The project applied for here is of interest to nutrition and food scientists, plant producers and toxicologists alike.

Determination of the lithium content of mineral and table water as well as drinking water from the region. Furthermore, the determination of the contents in beer, non-alcoholic beer and soft drinks. The selection of these foods was based on the National Consumption Survey II (NVZ II). To carry out these determinations, representative food samples from the region must be purchased and documented. Drinking water for the urban area of Fulda comes from six springs in the Rhön as well as from 30 wells. RhönEnergie Fulda GmbH operates ten waterworks and stores drinking water in 21 elevated tanks. Here it is necessary to work together with the water supplier.

Samples are taken in 15 ml polypropylene sample containers with screw caps. The samples are analysed flame photometrically or by ICP-MS
