Early childhood nutrition - insights into practice

When it comes to becoming a parent and being a parent, various decisions about the care and nurturing of the child are part of everyday family life.
The example of early childhood nutrition shows that such, actually private matters, are often influenced by different lay and expert opinions. While health-related arguments speak in favour of breastfeeding, bottle feeding makes it easier to delegate the task of feeding.
Thus, there is a better chance to divide family tasks and professional activities fairly between both parents. Individual studies could show that the decision for a feeding method often takes place in the early phase of pregnancy.
The reasons why women decide on a certain type of nutrition and which framework conditions have an influence on this will be investigated within the framework of this research project.

The aim is to gain insights into practice based on qualitative interviews with various experts and to gain an understanding of the topic of early childhood nutrition based on experiences in dealing with families.

By means of guided, qualitative interviews with experts, insights into the practice of professionals in the field of infant feeding will be generated. Professionals are understood to be various groups of experts in the context of the pre- and postnatal period, such as midwives and paediatricians. In addition, literature analyses and focus group discussions are planned.
Meta-analyses on the short- and long-term effects of breastfeeding on health will serve as the basis for evidence-based breastfeeding recommendations. The evidence for these recommendations will be analysed using quality assessment tools for nutritional studies.
