Hi, I’m Lena 😊

I’ve been studying Food Technology here since the 2022/2023 winter semester. I’m originally from around here and commute to the university.

What is Food Technology all about, and what do I particularly like about it?

Food Technology is an interdisciplinary engineering discipline. Since the degree is a Bachelor of Science, the natural sciences naturally play a major role. You learn both theoretically and practically how food (and more) is produced. Economic aspects are also covered. What I really like about the program are the many lab courses, especially in microbiology and chemistry. I also appreciate the selection of elective modules starting in the fifth semester—which don’t necessarily have to be related to food production. Examples include the elective modules “Biotechnology” or “Introduction to Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms and Pharmacology.” In the latter, you’ll learn how to produce items such as tablets and ointments.

What I particularly like here:

Our department is quite small, which is why there’s a strong sense of community among students—both within the department and across semesters—and everyone is there to help each other out when questions arise. Here at the university, the “Hochschultage” are my personal highlight; it’s a three-day university festival that takes place every year, featuring many workshops and other activities. There are also great activities in Fulda itself all year round. Whether it’s concert or poetry slam evenings at “Kreuz,” winding down the night at one of the many pubs, or the Christmas market.

Concerns you might have:

At the beginning of my studies, I was very unsure and had many questions of a purely formal nature. For example: “How do I write meeting minutes?”, “What do I do if I’m not very good at a module?”, “How do I best prepare for the exam period?”, “Where can I get various kinds of support?”, … Over the course of the semesters, I was able to gain my own experiences, but I also got to know the various support services offered by the university, for which I am very grateful and which have often helped me a lot.

Final thoughts:

College life is a rollercoaster of emotions. But when I look back on the past few semesters, what stands out most are the fun times I had with the friends I’ve made here—whether in lectures, during long hours in the lab, or just hanging out. Let’s not forget the breaks we took together in the cafeteria and the (spontaneous) field trips to chocolate and cookie factories, which were both educational and delicious😉.
