Here’s what Emelie says:

Hey!

I’m Emelie and I’ve been a student at Fulda University of Applied Sciences since 2020. I first completed my Bachelor’s degree in social sciences with a specialisation in intercultural relations (BASIB) here, and I’m now enrolled on the Master’s programme in Intercultural Communication and European Studies (ICEUS). 

As I was still very unsure during my school years about what I wanted to study after my university entrance qualification, I first did an international voluntary placement to give myself more time to think things through. After many discussions and new experiences, it became clear to me that I wanted to continue exploring intercultural and international topics during my university studies. However, I didn’t want to neglect my other areas of interest either. For example, I was interested in political issues relating to democracy and sustainability. During my search, I came across the interdisciplinary BASIB study programme and fell head over heels in love with it! So I returned from abroad and moved to Fulda, just under 400 km from my home town.

I settled in quickly here in Fulda, and the university studies live up to their promise: thanks to a wide variety of topics, I’ve now gained an understanding of very different perspectives and approaches that help me understand the world just a little bit better. Even the modules that I couldn’t really picture at first (e.g. communication studies) or that I was actually a bit daunted by (e.g. law) ended up being my favourite modules in the first semester. My initial concerns that Fulda and the Fulda University of Applied Sciences might be too small have not proved to be the case at all. The campus and the town offer plenty of great opportunities for culture, sport, meeting people, quiet moments in green spaces, and there are some really good cafés! What’s more, I’ve come to really appreciate the fact that the study programmes are smaller. This means you benefit from close contact with lecturers, fellow students and the head of the study programme. We know e
ly well, which gives us so many more opportunities for direct contact and space for exchange!

Apart from the actual course content, I’ve really made the most of what Fulda University of Applied Sciences has to offer, as well as the city’s vibrant community life: from language courses to workshops on advancement, and study advice to university parties; from the interdisciplinary project week to student assistant jobs; and from a semester abroad to voluntary work – I’ve taken full advantage of it all and would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about anything that’s relevant, in a narrow or broader sense, to your choice of degree programme!
