Dual study programmes

If you’re interested in combining an academic degree with sound practical training, we have just what you’re looking for. For many years now, dual study programmes have enjoyed increasing popularity both among students and businesses.

The academic courses combine a high-quality theoretical education with vocational training (dual or school-based) or with intensive in-company training. Fulda University of Applied Sciences works closely with cooperation partners such as companies and vocational training colleges. Interconnected phases at the University and phases in partner companies optimally prepare students for the start of their careers. These programmes also offer companies the opportunity to secure highly motivated young employees in good time.

Fulda University currently offers the following dual study programmes. Course are organised differently, so find out more about individual offers on the study programme websites:

What is a dual study programme?

You want to compete an academic degree but not miss out on practical experience? A dual study programme could be just the right thing for you. Dual programmes allow you to combine studying with extended periods of practical training. At the end of your course, you will not only have gained theoretical knowledge from the lectures and seminars you’ve attended at University, but you will also be familiar with working life in a certain profession or sector of industry. There are different kinds of dual programmes. If you start studying straight after leaving school, dual programmes with an integrated training component or practical experience are worth considering:

  • In integrated training programmes, students complete a full vocational training programme alongside their studies, so they have two qualifications in their pocket at the end of the programme: a Bachelor's degree from the University and a vocational training qualification.
  • In practice-integrated programmes, intensive practical phases are included as part of the academic programme. Although participants do not receive a second certification, the practical experience they gain enables them to start professional life straight after leaving university.

Advantages of a dual study programme

    • Applying knowledge directly: you learn about theoretical models in lectures and can directly apply and implement them in the next practical phase.
    • There are no “career shocks” after university: You gain practical experience while you are still studying, making it easier for you to start working life.
    • Good career prospects: the fact that you have combined theory and practice early on in your training makes you attractive for many employers. If you have worked with a practical placement partner during your studies, it is quite probable that you will be taken on by this company after you have graduated. Your experience equips you to assume positions of responsibility early on in your career.
    • Financial incentives: in some programmes, students receive a monthly allowance for the duration of their studies, giving them full financial independence.

    Admission requirements

To apply for a dual study programme, you need

    • a higher education entrance qualification and
    • a signed contract of employment or internship agreement with a cooperation or practical placement partner.

In the first step, prospective students apply directly to one of our practical placement partners or alternatively they suggest a company that might be interested in cooperating with Fulda University. We then check to see if a cooperation is possible.

In a second step, you apply for a place on a cooperative study programme at Fulda University. Remember to check deadlines and the specific requirements and conditions of the respective degree programme.

Admission to a cooperative Bachelor's degree programme is also possible for students who have attained the school-based part of the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife). In this case, you must submit the certificate confirming you have completed the school-based part of the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences and also the vocational training contract proving you have completed your first year of training. For more information about the higher education entrance qualification, contact Student Administration.
