Family Office

Counselling, Information and Placement Office for Students / Prospective Students

You are in the right place with your questions and suggestions on the topic of "Studying with a child/relatives in need of care".

The situations of people who take on social responsibility for others are different. At the Family Office, you can get advice on which offers can provide support in your personal situation in the "balancing act between the children's room and the lecture hall".

We have put together some information for you. Feel free to take a look around.

What childcare options are there?

What does the family-friendly infrastructure at the university look like?

Where can I find support if I am caring for relatives?

Which important contact points for parents are there in Fulda?

Where else could I look on the internet?

In a personal meeting, we can deal with your situation individually and focus on solutions for you personally. You can make an appointment by e-mail or by using the contact form on the right.

To the appointment

Childcare is an important basis for studying with a child. Sometimes it can be arranged within the family. In many phases, however, external care is necessary or makes sense.

We have compiled an overview of the offers at the university and in the city and district of Fulda for you. For more information or advice on childcare services and other topics, please contact the Family Office.

KinderStube

Childcareby the hourand according to need

The KinderStube offers students, doctoral candidates and employees of the university a childcare option directly on campus. By arrangement, children can be looked after - for short periods during lectures, but regularly every week.
In emergency and exceptional situations, an attempt is also made to support parents and organise one-off short-term childcare.

In any case, the KinderStube is a special offer with many possibilities, but of course it also has its limits.

With a child at university

Studying alone is often not an easy matter - how much more difficult it becomes when you become pregnant during your studies or are already responsible for a child. In addition to the joy of having a child, this time is also marked by many challenges. Organisational skills are needed to combine studies, pregnancy, child, household and the financing of all this. No one can take this task off the parents' shoulders. The university tries to provide support where it can. In addition to the counselling services and childcare, we have, for example, set up a family room and nappy-changing facilities.

Page heading

The family room

In the Family Centre (building 44), the university has set up a room for families in room 004. Here you can take a break with your children or have them looked after by your own childcare staff.

If you are interested, please contact the Family Office. You can also borrow a key from the learning scouts at the self-study centre for a short time.

Play corners

A play corner for all little visitors was set up in the refectory when it opened.
Next to this play area is also a nappy-changing room (T 037, below the stairs). Highchairs for children are also available.

Other places to play:
> in the corridor of the Family Office and KinderStube (Building 44)
> Department of Central Student Counselling (SSC, 2nd floor): Wall game and play box
> in the family room

Changing facilities

  • Cafeteria Changing room
  • Library Ladies' and men's toilets
  • SSC ladies' and gents' toilets
  • Family room

Children's plate in the canteen

In the refectory, students can get a free children's plate for their children up to the age of 15 if they eat a main course themselves. This is a half portion of a regular meal, which can be selected from the daily specials. The prerequisite is the presentation of an ID card at the cash desk. This can be obtained from the Studierendenwerk Gießen "Advice & Service" department. The ID card is issued upon presentation of the birth certificate and the student ID card.

There are also high chairs for small children, a nappy-changing room and a play corner in the refectory.

Family flats

There are three flats for families with children in the Studierendenwerk hall of residence at Wiesenmühlenstraße 3 and 5.

There is also an exchange for private housing providers in the rooms of the Fulda branch of the Studierendenwerk.

Further information is available on the website of the Studierendenwerk Gießen.

Design of an individual course of study

The measures to support student parents vary greatly in the individual degree programmes and are adapted to the respective requirements. To find out what options you have to better combine your timetable or course of studies with your everyday life, please contact the programme coordinator of your degree programme.

Leave of absence

Parents who temporarily do not wish to actively study due to the care of their child have the possibility to apply for leave of absence for the period of maternity or parental leave. This is also possible during pregnancy.

Interested students must note that the semester fee must be transferred by the deadline and the application for leave of absence must be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs by 15 April/15 October at the latest with proof of the reasons for the application. The application for leave of absence must be justified in writing. The data will be processed with the previously stored data. Retroactive leave of absence for a completed semester is not possible. Semesters of leave of absence do not count as subject semesters and are only possible in the first subject semester in special cases. Applications can be made via the Student Affairs Office. Contact

Please note:
As Bafög is not paid during a semester of leave of absence, or for a maximum of 3 months, we recommend that you seek advice beforehand .

Maternity protection

Since 1 January 2018, the Maternity Protection Act has also applied to female students if the place, time or course of a training event is mandatory or if they are required to complete an internship as part of their university education. Pregnant and breastfeeding students must therefore always be granted maternity protection.

In their own interest, pregnant students should inform the university about their pregnancy so that they can make use of the protection rights under the Maternity Protection Act and the university can take appropriate protective measures.

Further information is available on the website of the Student Affairs Office.

There are various counselling and contact points for parents in Fulda. The most important ones are listed here. If you are interested, you can find more detailed information on the websites of the facilities. Use the link at the end of the tile.
