Making focused and collaborative health research visible
The discipline of public health comes under “Health, nutrition and food,” the first of the three focus areas of research that together form the profile of Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
In recognition of the extensive public health research capabilities at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, the state of Hesse granted the university the right to independently award doctoral degrees in public health (Dr. P.H) in December 2016 (a rarity among German universities of applied sciences; doctoral degrees are normally awarded by research-oriented universities).
What are the aims of the Fulda Public Health Centre?
The Fulda Public Health Centre is a central academic institution of Fulda University of Applied Sciences which supports and promotes interdisciplinary, interdepartmental, interuniversity and international research. Its aim is to support public health-related activities in research, education, continuing education, advisory services and knowledge transfer as well as to strengthen and further develop research profiles and specialised resources.
What are the tasks of the Fulda Public Health Centre?
- Coordinating and supporting public health research activities
- Developing and implementing interdisciplinary public health research projects
- Expanding and refining the public health-related research infrastructure
- Communicating research results to the academic community and the general public in a serial publication (planned)
- Regular lecture series, public fora and academic conferences
- Supporting student projects in theory and practice as well as educating and training junior researchers by involving them in the centre’s research activities
- Supporting and promoting public health doctoral dissertations
Who teaches and conducts research at the Fulda Public Health Centre?
The public health scholars at the centre have been active in the public health community for many years, for example by being active members of various relevant academic associations such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sozialmedizin und Prävention (DGSMP, German Society of Social Medicine and Prevention), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung (DGE, German Nutrition Society), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährungsmedizin (DGEM, German Society of Nutritional Medicine), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Epidemiologie (DGepi, German Society for Epidemiology), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Pflegewissenschaft (DGP, German Society for Nursing Science) and the Deutsches Netzwerk Evidenzbasierte Medizin (DNEbM, German Network for Evidence-based Medicine).
Both the public health-related Master’s programmes at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, namely that in public health and that in public health nutrition, are institutional members of the umbrella organisation Deutsche Gesellschaft für Public Health (DGPH, German Public Health Association). Some of the scholars at the centre are members of the editorial boards or scientific advisory boards of public health-related academic journals such as the Jahrbuch für kritische Medizin und Gesundheitswissenschaften (Annals of Critical Medicine and Health Sciences), Public Health Forum, Prävention. Zeitschrift für Gesundheitsförderung (Prevention. Journal of Health Promotion), Ernährungs-Umschau (Nutrition Review), Pflegewissenschaft (Nursing Science) and many others.
