Guiding principle(s), goals & tasks

The centre introduces itself- one of the central questions of our time- how modern societies should and can develop towards sustainability and focuses on sustainable action as a social requirement.

Most recently, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, which are to be achieved by 2030. These goals address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. Sustainability is now recognised as a central principle for securing livelihoods in the long term and technological innovation, social change and political measures are crucial to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

In addition to ecological and economic sustainability, "social sustainability" refers to the aspects of sustainability that affect people's well-being and the stability of society. It is about ensuring social justice, equal opportunities and the participation of all people in social processes.

Social sustainability is therefore an integral part of sustainable development, ensuring that social progress is not achieved at the expense of social injustice or the exclusion of certain groups. The aim is to create a just, inclusive and stable society in which all people have the opportunity to manage a fulfilling and secure life.
