(Un)typically utopian - young people's ideas of the future at Islamic schools in Bangladesh and Italy
The project examines Muslim youths' visions of the future in the context of Islamic educational institutions in Bangladesh and Italy by asking to what extent these are interrelated with socially constructed utopias. The focus of the research is on the relationship between individual and collective affiliations and meaning-giving units, especially the nation state. How are these (re)adjusted? What implications and possible (re)positioning contribute to a transformation of dominant notions of (national) society? What is the significance of utopias in young people's conceptions of the future in the Muslim world? The project is based on a comparative ethnographic study of everyday living and learning contexts and asks about general and specific patterns, transnational references and the significance of different contexts within which young people imagine their future.
