Professorship "Statistics in Health Sciences" at the Department of Health Sciences

Professor Dr Iris Burkholder took over the professorship of "Statistics in Health Sciences" at the Department of Health Sciences on 1 March 2025.

After studying statistics with a specialisation in biometrics at the Technical University (TU) Dortmund and postgraduate studies in biostatistics at the University of Montpellier in France, she spent eleven years as an academic employee at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg. In 2001, she completed her doctoral degree in the subject of statistics at TU Dortmund University in cooperation with the DKFZ. Her thesis dealt with the mathematical modelling of precancerous lesions in the liver and was awarded the TU Dortmund University Dissertation Prize. From 2010, she worked as a self-employed statistician before being appointed to the professorship of "Health Science" at Saarland University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken in 2013. She has been teaching and researching at Fulda University of Applied Sciences since March of this year.

Professor Burkholder has wide-ranging research experience in the planning, implementation and statistical analysis of academic studies and teaching experience in the innovative and original teaching of statistical methods. In line with her motto "Statistics is fun!", she has developed inter-university study programmes and teaching materials that were awarded the Saarland State Prize for University Teaching in 2020. She is now looking forward to exchanging ideas with researchers, instructors and students at Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
