The joint project "Experiences and life situations of unintended pregnant women - counselling and care services" (ELSA) investigated how counselling, support and care affect the experience of an unintended pregnancy. The aim was to create a reliable data basis.

Pregnancies that were carried to term or terminated were included. The data was collected from the perspective of affected women and professionals. The project also focussed on regional differences.

The starting point was international research findings, according to which the burdens for unintentionally pregnant women are primarily caused by their difficult life circumstances and not by the carried or terminated pregnancy itself.

The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Health. The results of the research project have now been published in a final publication and are available for download on the Ministry's website.

Notes on the representativeness of the ELSA study

As the representativeness of the ELSA study has been repeatedly questioned, the researchers have developed a handout in which they reflect on and justify their methodological approach. The document is available here available here.
