Honouring deserving and innovative scientists and young researchers is part of the promotion of science and research at Fulda University of Applied Sciences. Every year, a wide variety of institutions award science prizes. Whether awards for scientific theses or prizes for research-related innovations - the spectrum is wide. Below you will find a selection of science awards that might be of interest to you, as well as information on current award winners.

Every year, the Dr Norbert Schmidt Foundation awards a dissertation prize worth 10,000 euros. The foundation, which was established in 2021, is the result of a generous basic scholarship from Fulda radiologist Dr Norbert Schmidt. Once a year, it honours the best doctoral degree completed at Fulda University of Applied Sciences.

The foundation's assets comprise 500,000 euros and, in addition to funding outstanding doctoral projects in Fulda, aims to make Fulda even better known as a centre of higher education and science.

The Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies Rhine-Main (VDE Rhein-Main e.V.) annually awards the Friedrich Dessauer Prize to the best final theses in the fields of electrical engineering/information technology at the:

  • Bingen University of Applied Sciences
  • Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences
  • THM Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (Giessen and Friedberg)
  • Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences
  • Fulda University of Applied Sciences
  • RheinMain University of Applied Sciences
  • Weilburg State Academy of Technology
  • Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences
  • Wilhelm Büchner University of Applied Sciences

With this award, the VDE would like to recognise outstanding services: benefits in the technical and academic field, motivate junior researchers and set an example for the social importance of engineers and their active participation.

The prizes are usually staggered as follows:

1,000 euros for the best Master's thesis
500 euros for the best Bachelor's thesis

The Board of Trustees of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation in Berlin, which is concerned with the rehabilitation of people with physical and multiple disabilities, awards a research prize on neurorehabilitation every three years within the framework of the Foundation's statutes. The prize is endowed with 30,000 euros. It can be shared. In addition, up to five commendations can be awarded, each endowed with 3,000 euros. The prize is to be awarded for current scientific research work in the field of neurological rehabilitation of people with acquired damage to the nervous system. The focus of the work should be on post-clinical long-term rehabilitation.

Examination and doctoral theses as well as post-doctoral theses, published project reports, book publications and specialist articles in German or English, completed no longer than two years ago, are accepted. The Board of Trustees of the Foundation decides on the awarding of the prize on the basis of the proposal of a jury composed of scientists from the fields of medicine, psychology and social sciences who are concerned with rehabilitation.

The purpose of the Foundation is to promote and support any kind of scientific food research in the interest of safe food - also in related research areas. One focus is on researching and investigating causal relationships in the subject areas of "raw materials and the environment", "production, transformation and refinement", "packaging, logistics and distribution" as well as "sustainability" and "animal welfare".

In addition, the foundation serves to promote educational projects and consumer protection in the areas of food and nutrition. Within the framework of the Foundation's activities, particular importance is attached to the transfer of relevant knowledge to a broad public at home and abroad.

The Heinrich Stockmeyer Foundation annually awards the "Stockmeyer Science Prize" endowed with 10,000 Euros and the "Stockmeyer Young Scientists Prize" endowed with 2,500 Euros. It also awards scholarships for young academics.

The Henriette Fürth Prize has been awarded once a year since 2004 by the Gender and Women's Research Centre of the Hessian Universities (gFFZ). The Henriette Fürth Prize is awarded to the best Bachelor's or Master's thesis of a year on the topic of gender at Hessian universities of applied sciences. The thesis should be of outstanding quality, deal with a topic relevant to women's and gender studies and thus have provided special insights.

The prize is endowed with 500 euros. It serves to promote particularly qualified young academics in the field of women's and gender research at Hessian universities of applied sciences in a more targeted manner.

The prize, which is named after the Jewish lawyer and committed social politician Nora Platiel (1896 - 1979), honours outstanding theses on social research and is endowed with a total of 2,000 euros. It is awarded by the Verein zur Förderung von Forschung und Wissenstransfer in Sozialrecht und Sozialpolitik e. V. and the Research Network for Social Law and Social Policy (FoSS) of the Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the University of Kassel.

With Nora Platiel as the namesake, reference is made to a person whose life's work can serve as a role model for junior researchers and who, with her socio-political and legal commitment in Kassel and Hesse, offers numerous points of contact with the Verein zur Förderung von Forschung und Wissenstransfer in Sozialrecht und Sozialpolitik e. V. and the FoSS.

Sparkasse Fulda is particularly interested in awarding annual prizes to students who have produced particularly outstanding theses during their studies. The Sparkasse offers three prizes, one from the field of economics, and two others can be awarded to graduates from all faculties. The prizes are endowed with 500 euros each.
