The European Green Deal aims to ensure a better, more sustainable and healthier life for us and future generations. In order to achieve this goal, 47 individual measures are planned within the framework of the Deal, covering a variety of topics:

Climate

Climate neutrality is a central point of the European Green Deal. For this reason, one of the Commission's measures in this area is a European Climate Act. In addition to climate protection measures, the EU is also taking action to address and adapt to the inevitable and irreversible consequences of climate change.

Energy

Achieving Europe's climate goals requires decarbonisation of the energy system. The planned transition to clean energy focuses on three aspects: a secure, affordable energy supply (based predominantly on renewables), a common, digitalised EU energy market and a priority for energy efficiency.

Agriculture

Agriculture is about a sustainable and crisis-proof EU food system that embraces our society and our planet. Specific objectives include ensuring food security, reducing the climate footprint of the EU food system and a global transition to competitive sustainability.

Industry

Green and digital transformation must also start in industry. New business models and clean and affordable technology solutions are being developed. The EU is bringing these ideas together in its industrial strategy. The strategy also incorporates lessons learned from the COVID 19 pandemic.

Environment and oceans

The EU has developed several measures to integrate the European Green Deal on Environment and Oceans. These are mainly measures to protect biodiversity and ecosystems, reduce air, water and soil pollution, and therefor ensure the sustainability of the marine-associated economy and fisheries sectors. In addition, the transition to a circular economy and the improvement of waste management are key goals.

Traffic

The transport and mobility sector is the second largest area of expenditure in the EU budget and accounts for 25% of the EU's total greenhouse gases. By 2050, the EU aims to reduce transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 90%. A comprehensive and clear strategy is needed to achieve this. The EU's #mobilityStrategy is divided into three areas: sustainable, smart and resilient.

Finance and regional development

The EU has pledged at least €1 trillion in sustainable investment over the next ten years to deliver the goals of the European Green Deal. The European Green Deal does not come alone, but is accompanied by an investment plan. Particular attention will be paid to leaving no one behind. The focus is primarily on citizens in the most affected regions. To achieve this, the "Mechanism for a Just Transition" has been created.

Research and innovation

To achieve the ambitious goal of the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, research and innovation play a central role. In recent years, the EU has already funded several projects whose results contribute to achieving the goals of the deal. The EU's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (2021-2027) will continue to fund projects and partnerships to fulfil the vision of the European Green Deal in the coming years.
