“Indigenous Ecological Sustainability and Restorative Governance in Africa: An Enquiry into the Ecophenomenology of the Ga-Mashie People in Ghana.”

This research explores the intricate relationship between indigenous ecological sustainability and restorative governance within African communities, focusing on the Ga-Mashie people of Ghana. Rooted in African eco-philosophy, it investigates how spiritual beliefs, such as the presence of divine beings in natural elements like trees, lagoons, and animals, inform a relational epistemology that treats nature not as a resource to be exploited, but as a sacred community to be engaged with in reverence and reciprocity.

The study centers on the ontological and normative frameworks that underpin the Ga-Mashie’s ecological governance systems, particularly concerning their sacred lagoons. Drawing from phenomenological ethnography, it examines how power is enacted not as domination (“power over”), but as generative capacity (“power to”) and cooperative engagement (“power with”) between human and non-human entities. In this respect, my project focuses on and explores ritualistic practices, priestly institutions, and customary sanctions as mechanisms for maintaining ecological balance and enacting restorative justice.

Positioned within the field of eco-phenomenology, this work advances an African ecophenomenological perspective by foregrounding lived experiences and mythical-political dimensions of environmental ethics. It challenges the anthropocentrism and extractivism of Western environmental paradigms and offers a critical reflection on the Anthropocene from an Afrocentric standpoint.

By centering indigenous models of governance and sustainability, the research affirms the philosophical richness and resilience of African ecological thought. It contributes to decolonial scholarship by proposing relational paradigms rooted in harmony, reciprocity, and co-existence as viable alternatives to techno-capitalist frameworks of ecological management and sustainable development.
