What is the story behind the study programme Business IT?
Video: © Hochschule Fulda

What does it cover?

Business IT helps businesses to structure their internal and external information and communication flows.

A classic cross-disciplinary subject, Business IT draws on contents and methods from the disciplines of business administration and computer science as well as from the social sciences and telecommunications.

Business IT specialists work at the interfaces between specialist and IT departments and need to be able to think in interdisciplinary terms.

Why choose this programme?

People who want to study Business IT should enjoy applying logical reasoning and be interested in business procedures. They should also be team players and good communicators with good social skill as projects are almost always conducted on a team basis. A sound knowledge of English is an advantage because most of the specialist literature is in English. No previous knowledge of computer science is required. All foundational principles are taught in the initial semesters.

How is the programme structured?

The study programme is divided into six semesters. In addition to subject knowledge and soft skills, particular value is placed on the practical relevance of the course contents.
As well as acquiring a firm grounding in business administration and IT topics, students can choose to take up an individual specialisation. The study programme’s distinct practice orientation is reflected not only in the contents of the tuition sessions but also in their form. Apart from lectures, the emphasis is on student presentations, group work and practical projects. In the sixth semester students first complete a practical placement (internship) at a company or an institution and then write their thesis. During their studies, students have access to up-to-date business IT software.

Where does it lead?

Today, there is no area of company business that can manage without IT applications. There are hardly any business processes that do not rely on IT. Business IT specialists plan and develop corporate information and communication systems, implement them and maintain them. To do that, they need to analyse business processes and organisational structures at companies and in administrative services.

Business IT is one of the most interesting, multifaceted and developable subjects to study. According to leading business organisations and specialist institutions (e.g. the professional organisation BitKOM, the Association of German Engineers (VDI), the German Informatics Society (GI)) the need for well-trained computer scientists will continue to grow rapidly in the future, too.
