What does it cover?

People are at the forefront of the interdisciplinary study programme. The objective is to develop technology that can be used to promote health. Students will be taught subject matter from the fields of IT, electrical engineering and the health sciences.

Discovering and implementing innovative technical solutions in support of the health professions is another important aspect of the study programme. By combining health care and technology, the aim is to tie into a trend in society, namely the increasing importance of health-related topics and their link with recent technical innovations.

The technical focus is on programming, embedded systems, web applications, mobile applications, databases and robotics. That lays the foundation for the development of skills which can be used to design and implement e-health products and processes that take account of the special features of the health-care market. With regard to health care management, in addition to fundamental medical knowledge, the main focus is on finding one’s way round the structures of the health care system and understanding the particular requirements in that area.

Why choose this programme?

You are interested in health topics ‒ at the individual and societal levels. You want to be involved in developing technical solutions that can be used to promote health. You should enjoy working with people and applying logical reasoning. You do not need any previous knowledge of the subject.

For people working in the health professions who would like to add technical knowledge to their experience, the study programme is a way of opening up new perspectives.

How is the programme structured?

The first four semesters are taken up by basic skills from the three subject areas involved. A key part of the study programme is the specialisation from the fifth semester onwards. Depending on the specialisation chosen, students attend three to six specialisation lectures. The three specialisation areas are:

Health Management

  • You learn about the development and marketing of technical solutions in the health care sector.
  • You explore marketing, human resources management and organisational and qualitative matters in the health care sector.

E-Health

  • Students can specialise in developing software in e-health projects.
  • The focus is on databases and quality assurance, together with digital image processing and mobile communication.

E-Health Product Design

  • If you are interested in the electronic aspects of the study programme, this specialisation could be just what you are looking for.
  • Students can choose to specialise in sensors or in measurement and control technology.

At every stage of the study programme, the teaching sessions are supplemented by lab exercises, practicals and project work.

Where does it lead?

Demographic change and the growing awareness of health issues will contribute to further growth of the health care market in the future.

In 2016 the health care business in Germany was employing approx 5.2 million people and had sales of more than €315 billion per annum.

There is a growing need for technical innovations in diagnostics and therapy, prevention, nursing and physiotherapy. This opens up excellent career prospects for our graduates, who have expertise in these fields.

In Germany alone, there are currently 12,000 enterprises working in e-health. Software development, the development of technical solutions, business consulting or careers in teaching and research are typical openings that have been taken up by our graduates.
