Economic Law - Sustainability and Ethics

By combining knowledge of law and of business administration, we set out to give our students an in-depth understanding of their chosen field of study and a unique set of skills and abilities. Communicative skills, paired with leadership and social competence, complement this invaluable specialist knowledge. Sustainability and ethics as applicable in law and business round off the programme contents.  

Graduates thus acquire the skills needed to work at the interface between law and business. They are able to conclude contracts and to read a balance sheet. Employers who understand both business and legal concepts are an invaluable asset for a large number of enterprises and organisations.  

A sound versing in sustainability and ethics complements those skills. Business lawyers assume responsibility for decisions at the place where business and the law meet - for society as it is today ans as it will be in the future. Sustainability is the means of maintaining social stability. From that perspective, economic, ecological and social goals are placed on an equal footing. Being future fit goes hand in hand with assuming responsibility for future generations worldwide. Ethics deals with the motivation for and the consequences of what people do. The criteria for evaluating decisions are geared to the values of society and also have an impact on them. Our graduates are given the foundations needed to make critical decisions - involving both sustainability concepts and ethical responsibility - in the challenging area between law and business.

Our graduates are consequently equipped to meet the challenges of professional practice. To that end, our programme teaches students to apply the facts and underlaying principles of law and business while taking account of societal issues.  

The Department of Business runs this programme in cooperation with the Departments of Social Work and Social and Cultural Studies.

Successfull completion of the programme leads to the award of a Bachelor of Law (LLB).

The programme is designed to be completed with a standard period of seven semesters.

For admission to the Bachelor of Law programme in Economic Law – Sustainability and Ethics, students need to have a general university entrance qualification, an entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or a qualification that have been recognized as equivalent by the Hesse State Ministry of Education (HMWK).

A good knowledge of German is also required. 

Details of the Bachelor's programme in Economic Law - Sustainability and Ethics are governed by the current version of the applicable Examination Regulations in conjunction with Article 54 of the Hesse Higher Education Act (HHG).

At present, only 30 students are admitted to the study programme.

The fifth semester is given over entirely to an internship.

An internship may be taken up by students who have earned 90 credit points (ECTS). An internship lasts six months. During that time, students are employed full-time during normal working hours. Any time that is missed during the internship must be made up. The internship is accompanied by seminars on sustainability and ethics at the University.

Students are said to have fulfilled the requirements of the internship when the company/organisation issues a certificate stating that the internship has been completed successfully, they have given a presentation and they have submitted an internship report by the end of the semester. The internship module also involves an examination.

The basic programme concept is the result of extensive deliberation. Motivated and highly qualified lecturers ensure high quality instruction that produces high quality graduates. Our team consists of professors, staff lecturers and adjunct lecturers. They all have practical experience, which is combined with a theoretical foundation and up-to-date research findings. This ensures that the programme contents are directly related to actual practice.

Most of the programme modules are designed as interactive seminars. Traditional lectures are not a frequent occurence. Small groups encourage a direct exchange between students and teachers. Complex issues and ideas are conveyed well thanks to the use of case studies, group work and relevant software. State-of-the-art didactic methods are our essential tools.

Students have access to learning materials via the Department of Business’ electronic platform “eFBW“. This platform is also used for communication between students and their professors and instructors.

After graduation, the door is open for careers with a wide range of different employers, e.g. private enterprises (corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises), chambers of commerce, professional associations, foundations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or in the public sector.

The main areas offering career opportunities are auditing, taxation, finance, legal departments, public tenders, sustainability and environmental management.

Your Bachelor's degree also entitles you to continue on to a Master’s study programme at Fulda University of Applied Sciences or elsewhere. These are the relevant programmes on offer at Fulda University:

A Master’s programme in commercial law can be another way of rounding off your university education, for instance at the University of Kassel. Holders of a Master’s degree may go on to study for a doctorate.
