Profile and objectives
What is it all about?
Managers in the field of logistics deal with many interesting questions and challenges: How do internationally operating companies organise transportation of their commodities? How do such different kinds of commodities reach the marketplace on time? How does a car manufacturer make sure that parts are available on the assembly line on time? If you are interested in the answers to these questions and others like them and enjoy connecting theory and actual practice, this programme could be just what you have been looking for.
The goal of this study programme is to provide students with broad, integrated and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the scientific basis for logistics management and to enable them to apply this knowledge to known and new logistical endeavours.
Programme structure
A particular feature of this study programme is its dual (sandwich) structure. Unlike conventional study programmes, students alternate between three-month study periods at the University and practical periods spent with one of our partner enterprises and organisations. The six-semester programme enables students to gather information that will help to solve practical and theoretical problems in the field of logistics at two centres of learning. Students also learn to assess and interpret that information as the basis for developing academically sound judgements that take account of social, academic and ethical factors.
Special focus
- Enterprise-specific and cross-company logistics management as well as the implementation of information technology in logistics management
- Thorough knowledge of the sectors of logistic services, manufacturing and trade
- Business management concepts, methodology and instruments and their application in logistics management
- The skills needed to communicate in national and international contexts and leadership skills
The study programme makes ample use of application-oriented teaching methods, e.g. case studies, project work and simulation games. Lecturers draw on their relevant professional experience to contribute practical examples to classroom discussions.
Content and structure
In the lecture hall today. In the company tomorrow.
Each semester consists of three months at the University and three months of hands-on training in a company. During the campus-based period, students complete four to five theoretical and application-oriented modules. In the hands-on period, students compose a written scientific report within the framework of a practice module. The study programme is concluded in the sixth semester with a Bachelor’s thesis.
The particular structure of the dual study programme gives students a good foundation in Logistics Management.
The programme content focuses on the acquisition of expertise and skills of relevance to internal and cross-company logistics, including the following:
- Logistic functions and services
- Industry specific logistics from the point of view of manufacturing, trade and logistics services
- Primarily cross-company-oriented supply chain management
Expertise is also acquired in the following areas:
- General business management, IT/EDP/quantitative methods and law
- Essential soft skills, especially leadership, social and decision-making competences
- Practice modules, where the primary focus is on the connection between theory-based knowledge and hands-on use

Instruction and instructors
The quality of this degree programme is largely attributable to the organisational framework and the didactic skills of our experienced educators. Our team comprises professors, highly qualified staff lecturers and adjunct lecturers. Our strength lies in conveying the knowledge of logistics that is required in actual practice. Furthermore, students learn the techniques of academic and scientific research, analysis and writing. This will prove especially beneficial should they decide to pursue a postgraduate degree programme.
We prefer seminars to traditional lectures. In other words, we like to foster active exchanges between teachers and students. Complex subject matter is taught through specific, comprehensible examples and case studies, and sometimes use is made of e-learning tasks and software (e.g. Excel).
Some of the courses are conducted in English. This gives students a valuable opportunity to become familiar with subject-specific terminology in English.
Students can access teaching material via department’s electronic platform “eFBW“, which is also a platform for communication between students and their professors and instructors.
For the purpose of quality assurance and enhancement, our courses and teaching are assessed towards the end of each semester.
Excellent career opportunities for graduates

As a graduate of the study programme in Logistics Management, your future prospects are excellent – first, because you start your career without the shock of shifting from theory to practice and, second, because the chances of being taken on by your internship partner are very high. It is not unusual for graduates to be appointed to positions of responsibility with their internship partners as soon as they have completed their degree programme.
What is more, logistics – the third largest economic sector in Germany – is becoming an increasingly important factor for corporate success. In view of the ongoing globalisation trends and further technological developments, logistics managers face new challenges that are part and parcel of working in a fascinating, future-fit environment.
